Fluid vs Crystallized Intelligence Explained
Fluid intelligence solves new problems. Crystallized intelligence uses knowledge you already have. IQ batteries usually report both, because a person can be strong at fresh puzzles and ordinary at vocabulary, or the reverse. The split explains why two scores on one day can disagree.
Fluid vs Crystallized Intelligence Explained
Fluid work is a rule you must discover. Crystallized work is a word or fact you must recall. Cattell described them as partners: fluid skill helps you learn, and learning becomes crystallized skill you can reuse.
How It Shows Up on a Test
A matrix or figure series is mostly fluid. A vocabulary or information item is mostly crystallized. Many real items mix both, so a full-scale number hides the split unless you look at the subscores.
What a Single Score Misses
The labels are not two kinds of people. They are two families of tasks. Calling someone a fluid thinker from one online game overclaims. Schooling can lift the crystallized side without changing how fast a new matrix feels.
How to Read Your Own Result
When two tests disagree, check which side they emphasized. A short puzzle quiz will not match a word-heavy quiz. Ask for the subscore story before you treat the gap as noise or as a crisis.
